PROF. ISAAC ADEWOLE
Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, a distinguished academic and medical professional, currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, a position he has held since December 1, 2010. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, USA, and has been a Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan since October 1, 1997.
Born in Nigeria, Professor Adewole completed his early education at Ilesha Grammar School, Ilesha, before pursuing higher education at the University of Ibadan from October 1973 to June 1978, where he earned his MB;BS degree. His academic journey continued with notable qualifications, including Fellowships at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCOG) in May 1986, and the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in January 1994. He was honored as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS) in January 2011.
Professor Adewole’s distinguished career includes numerous roles in both hospital and university settings. He has been a Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist at the University College Hospital (UCH) since March 22, 1989, and previously served at the Royal Crown Specialist Hospital, Ibadan. His early roles included Senior Registrar and Registrar at UCH and a Medical Officer at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital.
In addition to his clinical work, he has been deeply involved in research, including a Research Fellowship at Charing Cross Hospital, London. His extensive administrative experience includes serving as Provost of the College of Medicine, University College Hospital, and various influential committee roles within the University of Ibadan and beyond. His leadership extends to national and international levels, having served as the Immediate Past-President of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and as a member of several prestigious councils and committees.
Professor Adewole has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Bixby Leadership Fellowship from the Guttmacher Institute in 2008 and the Glaxo Allenbury Prize for the best overall performance in Paediatrics in 1978. His contributions to the field are further marked by his involvement in the management of national and international health projects, including the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
He continues to impact the field of obstetrics and gynaecology through his roles as an educator, researcher, and administrator, driving advancements in medical practice and health policy.
