Education:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery: University of Ibadan, 1987, with distinction in anatomy and a departmental prize in surgery.
  • Residency: Pediatrics and Genetics, University College Hospital, Ibadan, 1989-1994.
  • Postdoctoral Education: Bioinformatics, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
  • Fellowship: Genetic Epidemiology, Department of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology, Loyola University Chicago, 1999-August 2000.

Career:

  • 2003: Joined Howard University faculty, working in genetic epidemiology at the National Human Genome Center.
  • 2008: Joined the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) as a Staff Scientist.
  • 2016: Promoted to Associate Investigator at NHGRI.
  • Current Role: Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer at the NHGRI Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health.

Research Focus:

  • Genomics of complex diseases, including cardiometabolic disorders and childhood disorders.
  • Significant contributions to the understanding of obesity, serum lipids, hypertension, and blood pressure in African populations through pioneering genome-wide studies.
  • Notable work on the genetics of orofacial clefts, including novel IRF6 mutations in Van Der Woude syndrome and popliteal pterygium syndrome, as well as rare functional variants in non-syndromic cleft lip/palate.
  • Ongoing research on congenital heart defects (CHD) in African populations, involving genomic studies and the creation of a clinical epidemiology dataset.

Leadership and Contributions:

  • Co-chair, H3Africa Genome Analysis Working Group.
  • Member, H3ABioNet Scientific Advisory Board.
  • Co-creator of the NHGRI Electronic Atlas of Birth Defects for Diverse Populations.

Publications: Adeyemo has authored key papers on genome-wide studies and genetic research, contributing to the field of genetic epidemiology and the understanding of genetic structures and disorders in African populations.
