Dr. Segun Aina is a globally recognized professional banker, a leader in the financial technology (Fintech) industry, and an accomplished community leader. With over three decades of a distinguished banking career, Dr. Aina is known for his visionary leadership and significant contributions to the financial sector, particularly in the areas of operations and technology.
During his career in the banking industry, Dr. Aina held various leadership positions, including Executive Director of Operations and Technology at Ecobank and CEO of a technology-focused bank. His passion for leveraging technology to enhance banking services defined his tenure as President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (2012-2014) and President of the West African Bankers Association (Nigeria Chapter) in 2001. A key highlight of his career was his election in July 2017 as the pioneer Chairman of the Global Council of the Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB), a body consisting of thirty founding members from professional banking institutes across twenty-eight countries.
Dr. Aina’s foresight and dedication to the Fintech ecosystem led him to establish Fintech Associates Limited about fifteen years ago, where he continues to serve as Chairman. He is also the founding President of the Fintech Association of Nigeria (2017) and the inaugural President of the Africa Fintech Network (2018). His influence extends internationally as a member of the UK-Africa Fintech Investment Group, a UK Government initiative.
Beyond banking and technology, Dr. Aina is deeply committed to education and community development. He is the Chairman of the Advancement Board of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and a member of the University of Ibadan Research Foundation. Previously, he served on the pioneer Advancement Board of Obafemi Awolowo University (2006-2012). For his exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s development, he was awarded the Nigeria National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2010, and he has received honorary doctorate degrees from two Nigerian universities.
Dr. Aina is a distinguished alumnus of several prestigious institutions, including the University of Lagos, the University of Ibadan, Harvard Business School, INSEAD France, IMD Switzerland, and Lagos Business School. He is a Fellow of the London Institute of Banking and Finance, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, the Institute of Directors, and the Nigerian Institute of Management. He is also a member of the Toronto Region Board of Trade and the Canadian Council for Africa.
Dr. Aina’s contributions extend to the community, where he has served as President of the Otan Ayegbaju Progressive Union (OAPU) and participated in various national initiatives, including as a member of the National Confab in 2014. His philanthropic efforts are embodied in the Segun Aina Foundation, established in 1994 to support the education of brilliant but financially challenged students. The Foundation has positively impacted hundreds of young people, and the Segun Aina Foundation Awardees Association (SAFAA) was formed in 1999 to coordinate and support its beneficiaries.
SAFAA promotes friendship, unity, and academic progress among its members, fostering a caring community. With over 200 members worldwide, the association upholds the Foundation’s vision of empowering and educating youth, irrespective of politics, religion, or race.
Dr. Segun Aina is a respected thought leader and a sought-after speaker at local and international conferences. He is a dedicated family man, married to Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aina, and they are blessed with children.
